A technical foundation and a commercial lens.
Turning complex energy deals into clear commercial outcomes.

Commercial Clarity Built Inside the Industry
Ben Lacey brings over two decades of embedded industry experience across global energy leaders including Shell, AGL and BG Group. Unlike traditional advisory models, Ben’s perspective is grounded in the physical and operational reality of the energy sector—spanning gas, power, renewables, storage, and carbon markets. He specializes in surfacing the commercial risks hidden inside complex energy agreements, ranking them for executive clarity, and structuring deals that hold up in the real world. Having led commercial strategy and trading from the inside out, Ben delivers rapid, actionable insights, frequently turning around critical risk findings within 24 hours to keep high-stakes negotiations moving.
Today Ben helps energy suppliers, heavy industry and major producers navigate complex commercial agreements with clarity and speed, giving executives clear commercial pathways in environments where the risks are high and the timelines are tight. His work spans the country, from east coast gas and power markets to the Dampier to Bunbury pipeline and WA domestic gas supply on the west coast.
He started his career as a station engineer in 1989, learning how energy assets actually work long before he ever touched a contract. Those early years still shape the way he analyses risk, because he understands how commercial decisions play out inside real plants.
In the early 2000s he moved into commercial and trading roles, learning how deals, prices and markets truly move. Since then he has spent two decades helping companies navigate and derisk complex energy agreements, working across major global energy companies including AGL, BG Group and Shell, leading commercial structuring and trading work across the full spectrum of gas, power, renewables, storage and carbon markets.
That depth runs into market structure, not just deals. Ben works fluently across the National Electricity Market and the east and west coast gas market frameworks, AEMO registration and dispatch processes, and pipeline and transport economics, the regulatory machinery that decides what a commercial position is actually worth.
What sets the work apart
Ben designs pragmatic, fit for purpose commercial solutions that cut through noise and get deals moving, working fast to protect and create value while preserving deal space and a high conversion rate. Most importantly, he reads three layers at once: the engineering reality of how the full energy chain physically works, the regulatory and market structure that governs it, and the commercial outcome that sits on top. That is what lets an agreement transition cleanly into commercial operations after execution, not just survive on paper.
